For companies with more than one product, platform or team. A shared visual language that makes future design faster and more consistent.
A design system is not a style guide. A style guide tells designers what colours and fonts to use. A design system is a living library of reusable components, documented patterns and governance rules that the whole team uses to build consistent interfaces without reinventing the wheel on every project.
Design systems make sense for companies at a certain scale: multiple web properties, multiple teams working on UI, rapid product development cycles, or frequent handoffs between internal and external designers. Below that scale, a well-documented brand guide is usually sufficient.
We build design systems in Figma with component libraries that mirror the front-end code. CSS custom properties, a token-based spacing and colour system, and documentation that a developer can actually work from.
